My goal for this week is 35 so I just need 14 in the next 3 days, with one of those a longer run.  Not sure if I should take one of those days off or not.  I've done 7 days in a row, which usually is a bit long for me.  None have been difficult so not sure I need a rest day.  I guess we'll see what happens.

From timp on Thu, Jan 24, 2013 at 12:29:18 from 159.63.144.194

Hey Jon - I kind of wanted to do peachtree - maybe both run from our houses to highland and ponce and then take ponce to peachtree and then turn toward buckhead - then we can turn around when we get to the desired distance. I'd like 14 - that should take us to the amtrak station area.

Hey Rhett - yeah getting hit would be quite a bummer. I'm still enjoying running by feel rather than being tied to my watch.

Hey Dale - yeah it is a really good way to do some informal speedwork.

From Rhett on Fri, Feb 01, 2013 at 11:07:08 from 74.41.239.14

Hey, they can't all be good runs. I had a tough one yesterday that I cut short as well. When I have a run like that I figure my body just needed some rest and when it recovers, I'll be even stronger than I was before. I hope you're feeling good today.

From timp on Fri, Feb 01, 2013 at 18:38:03 from 99.110.188.230

Hi Allie! yeah it won't be a fast one but I need something to change things for me. maybe this will help shake things up.

Dale - it is the local one tht runs through Atlanta. Kind of tough - and I've never had a good run for it. Maybe this year will be better.

JG - yeah I'll need some help in the last miles. They are harsh.

got there nice and early (thought it started 30 min prior to when it really did), got in a good warmup, and then just tried to go out at a nice easy pace that I could hold.  I didn't really want to red line today.  This was just a way to see where I am with my fitness.  I think I brought back a few seconds in the last mile.1.  mile 1 6:20, mile 2 12:40ish.  So I must have run a little faster in the last.  cool.

Still waiting for the official time - 19:08 - it should be at least 5 sec faster cause of where I started in the pack.

Either way I am happy with this time.  It is my new 5K PR since I started all over.  :)

I had a little faster time in me but probably not more than a few sec a mile.  I want to get back under 18 for this distance.  I just need to keep training consistently and NOT get hurt.

may go out for 6 later - wanted to do 10 but not sure I have the heart for that this afternoon.

Well they have me at 19:19 -- that's weird - 19:26 clock time.  I thought for sure I heard  19:09.  whatever

I have 4 weekends before the marathon weekend.   Although i can't imagine running still today, I want to try a long run on Saturday.  I have to get up to 20 at least.  May be able to get to that twice?

I signed up for this race in late January as a way to get my act together a little.  I decided that I need to try to get out of my comfortable zone and back into some longer, tougher races.  The comfortable zone hasn't taken me anywhere but up in weight and to slower times so I thought a change would be good.

My plan was to pick up the 3:30 group and run with them.  I started may 50 meters behind them and caught up in a half mile or so.  I passed them a couple miles later and was maybe 30 sec or so in front.  Picked up JG at mile 7 and he ran the rest with me.  It was great to have someone to run with and he really kept me going when my legs started to go.  I only stopped once to strech my legs - around mile 21 - and that was just for 5 or 10 seconds.  By the half I was at 1:42:xx - which was right ahead of plan by a little.  I knew that the last half was much harder and it certainly was.  After around 16 my legs and energy levels started to drop off.  Of course that coincided with the difficulty of the course.

Long story short, I didn't stop and I only lost a little time in the last half.  Given my training losing time in the second half is not surprising.

BIG thanks to JG for dragging me along for the last 19!

Then she went and had a great softball game -- two great hits and some good fielding.  We tired her out :)

I did another 10.3 in the late afternoon.  I did the 12-6 am shift and was running on fumes.  But I kept going.  It was just over 8 pace.  Not good but not the worst thing in the world.  At least I did it.  I just wanted to hit 40 for the week.  Even without the run walk 5k, I got it, so that's goal accomplished  - yea tim!  Got to build from somewhere, right?

Strange run -

Q ran the peachtree JR 3k this morning along with a few hundred of her closest friends.  Actually one of her closest friends (and sis) were there.  That was very nice.  The kids run it all by themselves, starting in age groups 12-7.  The ATC does a really good job with this one.  And it is only $12 or something like that.  Nice tshirt and goodie bag along with it.

Then I ran when they stopped on the way home for doughnuts.  That put me 4 miles from home - so to do a normal 12 miler I had to try to be creative.  Turns out I took a road and ended up running the wrong way for a half mile -- until I crossed over the interstate - instead of running back into the city.

I took about 20 min longer than expected and I think my watch got turned off for a while.  I maped it manually to get the miles, but the time is way off

13.9 prob at 8 or a little slower.  I really sweated on this run and didn't have any water along with me.  some dang big hills in this route -

biggest week in a while at least

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
31.000.000.000.0031.00

Returned to this race after missing it the last two years.  I'm not injured this year, so I didn't want to miss it.  It is a beautiful course along and around the river.

The family came along this time, which was cool  We got a hotel in Greenville, SC, which is about an hour and a few minutes from the race.  I left them sleeping at 5AM and headed out for the mountains.  It was a perfect morning, if not a little chilly.

I really had not trained for long distances since I did the marathon in March, so I just wanted to finish today.  I am not in the best of shape, so I thought maybe 7-8 hrs.  Plus my feet never seem to hold up for these distances.  The goal was just to get out there to see what happened.

The first 3+ drop about 1100 feet and then you turn around and climb back up.  It is a good way to wake up the cardiovascular system.  I didn't want to take it too hard like I did in 2010.  I stayed behind people who i thought were at a decent prudent pace.

After that section, there is a 10+ mile section without any aid station.  Of course I should have taken both of my water bottles, but I didn't.  It wasn't too hot so it wasn't a huge deal, just not as much liquid available as I would have liked.  I stayed behind one of the other runners for a while, until I had to stop to collect my heart rate.  I lost a few spots here but wasn’t too concerned about that.  I really enjoyed the section by the river.  It is very run-able and is quite beautiful with all of the waterfalls and such.

After the aid station there is about 2 miles mostly downhill and then you turn around and run back up to the aid station.  Once you hit that, you have about 11 or so to the finish without aid.  Luckily some saint set out a Gatorade bucket at the road, with a mile to go.  It was a great way to spend the last hill climb/decent.

I finished in 6:45:xx according to my watch.  It was within a minute of the time in 2010 which is really encouraging.

I fought the concept of quitting a lot in the first 12 or so miles.  I wasn't hurting or anything.  I think it was just part of the lazy me that I needed to face.  So I just motored on as best as I could, doing the run walk thing as needed.  I think I hit 15 or 16 at 3 hrs and then slowed down a little after that, as expected.

I felt mostly good at the end.  I was tired and started cramping in my calves but other than that, I wasn't totally wiped out, like I normally am at the end of a 50k.  And for whatever reason, I never really reached that point of total despair.  Usually in one of these long races I feel like just sitting down and not moving.  This time it was hard, but it never felt hopeless.  Maybe having my GPS watch this time helped put a concrete number of miles to go on the seemingly endless trail.

After I drove back to the city we walked around Greenville that night and the next day before heading back to Atlanta.  It turns out that Greenville has quite a fun little downtown area.

The biggest plus this year was that the soreness was much less than years past.  I'm not sure if it was because of my running strategy, wearing my regular running shoes, or that I'm in awesome shape ( :)  ).  I usually can't run or do anything normally for several days after a long race, but I was able to run very normally yesterday (Monday) and today.

From Rhett on Fri, Aug 02, 2013 at 13:24:35 from 24.121.0.8

That's a good long ride. Since I'm doing a half ironman soon I've been reading a lot more about cycling. Sounds like cyclists take in a lot more fuel than runners usually do.

From timp on Fri, Aug 02, 2013 at 15:12:41 from 99.110.188.230

Rhett -- whens your race? thats really cool!

I believe that about the fueling. All I took was water and I totally lost the fire after about 10.. I different ballgame to learn I guess.

Right now it is just a supplement to running. I am enjoying the every other day run/bike right now.

From Rhett on Sat, Aug 03, 2013 at 10:22:31 from 199.117.154.53

My race is on October 19th in Las Vegas. The swim and run don't scare me a bit, but that 56 mile bike ride in the middle of it all has me worried. It is a very hilly bike course and finishes with about a 10 mile climb ranging from 4 to 6 % incline.

From timp on Sun, Aug 04, 2013 at 13:24:12 from 99.110.188.230

Went without watch for an 8 miler and had to alter my route so I got a bonus half mile.  No idea on the pace but I didn't have to walk at all, which is an accomplishment at this point.  I have resigned myself to the fact that I am starting over.  It isn't quite from scratch, but it is starting back to where I was maybe 6 or 7 years ago - maybe.

Cool.

From Tom Slick on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 06:04:46 from 69.171.160.40

Why do Mondays always seem to be so hard to get motivated for except Boston? Hey Bro TimP, when are you doin' Boston again?

From Rhett on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 15:21:18 from 24.121.0.8

One seventh of our life is spent on Monday's so we better just enjoy them.

From timp on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 15:38:07 from 99.110.188.230

yeah mondays are usually good for me - it is later in the week that's been the trouble recently.

From Tom Slick on Thu, Oct 24, 2013 at 15:58:38 from 168.179.157.87

With my long runs on sunday I'm usually looking forward to Monday as a rest day!

true true

Have you had another Monday run yet?

Race: ATC Atlanta Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:10:23

Signed up for this one in the spring and I just haven't done my long runs to get ready for it.  Wasn't sure I was going to do it until the morning.  Decided to take my medicine and do the race.  Beatuful day for a run.  I started behind the 4:30 pace group and just took it easy.  I caught up with the 4:00 group but at 21 my knees started to protest.  I lost about 10 min in the last 5.2 due to stretching and a little walking.

All in all, it wasn't as bad as I thought.  I made it home by noon for work.

Well run and pretty well supported race.  Liked the little post race jackets and food boxes from fitful.com.  It is a very challenging course with hills everywhere.  At least the last half mile was flat...

Sounds like a good morning. To run that far without preparing for it is tough no matter how easy you take it. Good job. Maybe that will be the bit of mojo that gets you back racing fast again.

From timp on Mon, Nov 04, 2013 at 19:42:13 from 99.110.188.230

Hey Rhett - may never be fast but at least i want to be out there running.

From Tom Slick on Fri, Nov 08, 2013 at 09:48:15 from 69.171.160.164

How did I miss this one? Good job gettin' it done man. How is the knee coming along now that you have had some recovery time go by. Whats your next move?

.what an outstanding day for a run -- 6.5 around town.  different route to shake things up a bit.  felt good after several days recovery.  really felt good enough to run on Wednesday but I burnt the cr@p out of my hand right before leaving.  It was throbbing too much to consider running with it.  then halloween then football game.  too many excuses. but today was good :)

Lookin like you're taking it easy. What's your fightin' weight these days?

From timp on Wed, Nov 06, 2013 at 21:53:38 from 99.110.188.230

hey Marc! - I am right around 153 today, give or take a couple on a good or bad day Been at least steady for the last year. Don't want to be this weight but I sit too much for my job and don't run as much as I used to.

How's it going?

From DaleG on Wed, Nov 06, 2013 at 21:55:09 from 152.216.11.5

Nice job, Tim! I'm thinking about not wearing the Garmin anymore. I look at it way too much while I'm running.

From timp on Thu, Nov 07, 2013 at 06:10:41 from 99.110.188.230

Hey Dale -- how's it going?

I find it refreshing to leave the watch at home. Just go out and run. I've only worn it a few times in the last few months.

From Tom Slick on Thu, Nov 07, 2013 at 07:19:52 from 69.171.160.123

one more time-- felt good.  nice to be healthy.  I just need to stay consistent and run 5-6 days a week, even if it is just 4 miles.  I've slacked long enough.  Maybe need to figure out alternative times to run...

Have you got a goal? I find it easier to get consistent when my feet have a defined "goal". Wish you were doin' Boston with us in 2014!!!!!

From JG on Fri, Nov 08, 2013 at 10:02:03 from 99.141.151.28

I think your goal should be Boston '15 it is being run on my birthday. I guess I better write that down as my goal too, because if I dont start running I won't get invited to my party! Lol

From Tom Slick on Sat, Nov 09, 2013 at 10:09:49 from 69.171.160.182

Wishing you & your family a Happy Holidays! Alex & I are off to PA tomorrow afternoon after he finishes his last midterm ... which is clearly making for a more stressful week for me than it appears to be for him! lol
