How is your foot?

How is 2012 treating you?

From timp on Wed, Jan 04, 2012 at 13:08:01 from 144.188.24.32

foots good - we'll see how it handles the 50k this weekend. Running it with fellow blogger, JG. It is my birthday that day so it is just for fun.

The year is a little light on the miles but there's been a lot of family time. The kids are back in school and things will be back to normal quickly.

From JG on Wed, Jan 04, 2012 at 15:42:06 from 71.59.27.33

Well ... at least your legs will be rested for Sunday ... and nothing more important than family time! I hope I can keep pace with you ... looking forward to it!

From timp on Wed, Jan 04, 2012 at 16:12:16 from 144.188.24.32

I am looking forward to it as well - it looks like the weather should be pretty good for us. I'm just hoping we can both drag the other along for the whole distance.

From JG on Wed, Jan 04, 2012 at 16:29:38 from 71.59.27.33

Sounds like a plan ... it would be fun if the last lap was the fastest! :) Any idea on a time we might end up with? Trails like that are hard to speculate!

From timp on Wed, Jan 04, 2012 at 16:39:31 from 144.188.24.32

man - I'm not sure. depends on the condition - 5:00-5:30? I think that last year was the first year they had it at sweetwater. I seem to remember it was either really cold or it was snowy or something. the winner was in at 4:41. we'll see. pacing pacing pacing -

Ran the Guts Fat A$$ 50K yesterday.  It was nice to start another GUTS race.  It has been a couple of years since I've been to one.  Ran the first three laps with JG.  It was very nice to have someone to run with.

Unfortunately I was a half a$$ and didn't go out for the last two laps.  I wasn't mentally or physically prepared for 34 miles.  Plus, I didn't want to trash my training for the next week or more just to finish this race.   I am hobbling around on my foot enough after doing the 20 miles. I'd hate to see myself if I'd finished.  This is my first DNF which sucks but it is what it is.

I really wish I was able to run today.  Maybe tomorrow.

Probably a good idea to DNF. Don't want to ruin all your training for a race you aren't prepared for. Save it for another day!

From JG on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 12:22:01 from 71.59.27.33

I really enjoyed running with you Tim, you made the right choice ... and had a solid 20+ mile mile training run on some tough terrain ... great job!

From DaleG on Wed, Jan 11, 2012 at 03:24:00 from 152.216.7.5

Bummer that you had to DNF. I know how you feel, but I think you made a wise choice not finishing.

How is the foot feeling today?

From timp on Wed, Jan 11, 2012 at 09:42:27 from 99.110.188.230

Thanks Smooth! --it was fun while I was out there.

Yeah Dale, it kind of stinks not to finish, but I'm ok with it. Swelling is going down and it barely hurt when I woke up today. As it loosened up, it feels almost all better. I might try a short run this evening.

From Tom Slick on Wed, Jan 11, 2012 at 16:39:15 from 168.179.156.188

Wow, I'm totally impressed that you even started the race and then you went on and grabbed a great 20 miler out of it. Too bad you had to chalk up a "DNF". If you hang around long enough a DNF seems to just happen! I haven't registered my first DNF....yet! But I have a DNS (Did Not Show, this was the year of my knee surgery) from the 2008 St George Marathon. Keep up the great training.....

From timp on Wed, Jan 11, 2012 at 17:22:53 from 144.188.24.29

Thanks Slick - yeah it was bound to happen one of these years. I will start back at the training today or tomorrow. Speed work will start next week if not this week.

So is your left foot a forefoot landing or a heel landing? Nice run and nice pace especially at the end.

From timp on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 10:51:59 from 144.188.24.29

hey Rhett, funny, I just looked at the wear on my shoes and it was a bit of a surprise. There is actually more wear on the heel of my right foot than on my left. Looks like more midfoot wear on it as well. Left foot has more wear forefoot.

So...not sure what to think.

Maybe if I just stay out of the ultras I'll be ok.

From Rhett on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 11:07:13 from 170.215.58.122

Maybe you have one leg longer than the other... In that case I suggest chopping off part of one leg. :)

From timp on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 11:20:23 from 144.188.24.29

I think you are right, Rhett. One leg is a smidge longer.

From timp on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 11:20:56 from 144.188.24.29

maybe a little sandpaper to the base of my foot, just the cut that extra 1/4" off... :)

From Rhett on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 16:24:14 from 170.215.58.122

Tim, I was reading in Running Times and they were saying that if one shoe shoes more wear toward the forefoot than the other then that is often from one leg being longer than the other. They didn't have any good solutions for it though.

From timp on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 16:58:31 from 144.188.24.29

that's kind of cool to know - I guess we automatically adjust our stride to take that into account.

From fly on the Wall on Thu, Feb 02, 2012 at 14:08:19 from 204.113.19.47

I want that pace for my run today. Can you loan it to me?

I'll trade you feet. Leg length discrepancies are often addressed with a lift and/or orthotic, not that you would benefit from either. My legs are the same length when sitting or lying, but when standing, walking, or running my left leg becomes shorter because my left foot pronates to an extreme. The "fix" is rigid orthotics. My left orthotic is has both a neoprene overlay on top and a 'lift' on the bottom.

From timp on Thu, Feb 02, 2012 at 15:04:19 from 144.188.24.32

Now how exactly did the dark slow you down? Was there some mystical dark power weighing down on you? I run in the pitch dark all the time and haven't noticed this phenomenon.

its the cruddy sidewalks on most of my routes around here..tree roots mainly mess them up. Maybe I need to invest in a headlamp.

Is this a different foot injury than the one you've been dealing with for a while?

From timp on Tue, Feb 07, 2012 at 14:19:18 from 144.188.24.26

no - same one. felt good last week. Had a good run Thursday night. Friday couldn't run. I think I sat too long reading on the couch with my feet bent under me, which makes me think this is a tendinitis.

From MarcE on Tue, Feb 07, 2012 at 18:27:38 from 129.188.33.25

Uggg. I hope your opposite knee or hip doesn't start bothering you from compensating for the sore foot. I hope it's better soon.

From timp on Tue, Feb 07, 2012 at 19:07:10 from 144.188.24.26

yeah Marc - It was hurting again today and I stopped after .25. I'm not going to limp through a 4 or 5 miler and make things worse. Kind of puts me a mood but I'm trying to be good.

From Rhett on Tue, Feb 07, 2012 at 20:56:00 from 74.32.209.119

So your ran with it wrapped? What did you wrap it with? Did it help? It must have been really bothering you for you to run at that pace. Maybe you were just running too slow (for you) and that is why it hurt. :)

From timp on Wed, Feb 08, 2012 at 08:32:31 from 144.188.24.25

hey Rhett- yeah I've done that in the past. It just helps to keep it stable. Although if I have to run so much slower than normal it is probably doing more harm than good.

From Rhett on Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 15:15:04 from 170.215.58.122

Tim that reminds me of the time when 2 of my sons (when they were 10 and 5 years old) were running a 2 mile race that was going on simultaneously to a 5K I was running. The turn around area was not marked well at all. They ended up running a ton extra and when they got back to the finish line they were so mad they refused to cross the finish line. I thought it was hilarious to see them protest like that. Anyways. Sounds like your foot needs some rest and possibly some professional attention. Get that thing better.

Hey Andy and Allie - thanks. There is still some achy type pain which I would probably ignore if I was training for something. I'm really just tired of these niggling little injuries. At this point I think maybe I need to hit the gym hard for a couple weeks and then see what happens. I've been in this workout plateau for a while now. I've never been more pleased with a slow 4 miler.  It is so beautiful out that I really couldn't bear to go to the gym and look out of the window at the runners.  Plus I realize after 10 days (or so)of gym workouts, that I really hate it.  Maybe if it is a source of add on workouts it might be fine, but everyday will be, or would be, a struggle.

So I put on my old magic shoes and went for a run.  It was a slow run but dang it felt good to get out to my favorite route.  A little soreness but it was minimal and things fell good tonight.  I think I will jog my 1/2 on Sunday and just enjoy being out with the crowd.

The short story is that prior to today I had run under 6 miles since my last race, on Feb 11th.  So no fitness and definitely no legs.

I was going to skip it but then I ran 4 on Thursday and decided things weren't that bad.  So I decided to give it a go and run with the pack for fun.

It was really kind of nice to run with no pressure other than to finish and not get hurt.  I moved back from my starting corral to one several back and started in the back of that.  Then I just went with the flow of the crowd.  It was fun being in a group and getting to pass lots of people.  It was even better that my foot felt pretty normal and didn't give me any problems.  My quads and hamstrings weren't enjoying the pounding but at least they didn't cramp.

My finishing time was slow but I was pleased to get through it.  It was fun to be at a big race again.

1:47:09 overall -

first 8 were 8:22 ave pace

last 5.1 were 7:51 ave.  Last one was low 7's probably (didn't use my watch so just a guess)

I'm glad the stiffness is going away.

I'm trying to eat better this week, too. I've slowly been putting on weight.

From timp on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 10:06:53 from 144.189.100.26

yeah Dale - I can't seem to keep a downward trend going. Some consistent training sure would help me, I know.

good job taking the recovery seriously after your great race earlier this week.

From timp on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:14:21 from 144.189.100.26

Allie - thanks. I'm trying to be smart. I talked to a former XC/Track coach today and he reocommended me working on strength building exercises for my legs so that my weaker leg (which is where the chronically bad foot is) gets closer to the other. I think he is right so that will give me something to work on.

From Teena Marie on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:23:54 from 174.27.198.157

I feel you on the eating. Wouldn't it be heavenly to have a personal chef (for snacks and all)?

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 16:17:02 from 204.113.19.47

The swamp was cool but not quite what I expected. We went to the State Park on the east side near Fargo. The swamp was logged 80 some years ago and thus almost no big cypress remain (still a lot of smaller trees). An on going drought meant that some of the "swamp" is pretty dry. They also had a forest fire last year, so areas are still blackened and lack vegetation. Lots of alligators though. We took a state park ranger led boat tour which was great, but it would have been even better with a canoe or kayak.

Good job on the bike Tim. I missed my usual Tuesday bike ride this week. I'm looking forward to getting it done tomorrow though. I think the avg speed on the bike is only relative to yourself on that bike. Bike quality makes such a difference in speed, but at least you will know how your are doing compared to your past rides when on your bike.

From timp on Thu, Apr 26, 2012 at 09:40:26 from 144.189.100.26

From JG on Thu, Apr 26, 2012 at 18:16:38 from 71.57.246.108

Wise move & great biking Tim! When I bought my $180 brand spanking new Schwinn Varsity, the one thing I added was clip pedals, in part because I already had the shoes for Spin class on the advice of the instructor! Anyway, they make a huge difference and give a much better leg workout, because you can pull up versus just pushing down & going limp for half of the revolution! I got the clips on CL for $20 & the shoes were like $30 on Amazon ... a good investment that you can transfer to a new bike if you ever get one.

Hey Steam, how is your knee??

My foot is good. I'm just trying to mix in the bike so I don't mess it up as quickly this time.

Knee is not feeling so good today. I can't take the pain meds, they make me siiiiick!

You are smart. I need to be more like you and mix things up. I guess I will try mixing things up when I am back to walking! I hope the foot holds out and gets stronger!

Debating with myself whether or not I should sign up for a fall marathon.  Thinking about signing up for the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon in Nov.  or the Atlanta marathon, on the weekend before Halloween.   I really don't want to do one just to slog through it.  However, it may just be the thing to motivate me.   I think I'll see how training goes the next month before I commit the $$

Today was an encouraging run.    I turn away from home at the 4 mile mark and added about 1.5 miles to the run.  Felt good nearly the whole way.  Got a little tired at the end but didn't slow down.

better than last week's track day so I'll take it.   The paces felt pretty natural and I didn't feel like I was pushing.  Maybe that means I didn't run fast enough.  And it is weird how I locked into the same paces.  weird.

From timp on Fri, May 25, 2012 at 15:11:37 from 144.189.100.25

Thanks Smooth - yes I still feel lucky to be able to get out and run.

No I didn't sign up for anything yet. I keep changing my mind about which one would be best to do. That one is on Nov 10. There is also one here in Atlanta run by the Atlanta Track Club. That one is Oct 28. Wouldn't have to travel for that one but it is a more challenging course.

Hey Slick - I'll be doing Atlanta Track club races this summer. First one up is a hilly 4 miler on the 16th. Then may get a bib for the Peachtree 10k on the 4th of July from JG. After that there is another 4 mile 10 days after that.

Just need to get out and do one.

2 warmup, 2xtempo miles, .25 wog, 2x800 (2:50), .25 inbetween each, 2x400 (1:25 and 1:21) with 200 wog after each, rest was cooldown.

pretty happy with this one.  I was tired before going and it ended up being good I think.  Another guy was out there doing 800 repeats near my pace, so that helped a lot.

Ran over to Emory again to watch a few minutes of track night.  Got to see some 400s this time.  Then finished.   Felt strong at the end - a couple low 7s at the end.

About 2.5 miles in I had a little tug in my left groin area, which is really weird cause I haven't had an issue with that since soccer in high school.  I stopped, made a feeble attempt at a stretch, and then started walking home.  Well that got boring and slow so I jogged it out and it never hurt again -- weird.  I hope that doesn't come back.  I don't need an injury.

thanks to JG for getting me out the door today!

Ran the Peachtree Road Race today.  Goal was to run 6:30's with JG.  After the first 3 the hills hit and he told me to take off and meet him at the end.  I tried to make up a little time to go under 40.  Mile 6 was 6:01 and the .2 was 5:30ish pace, but I left things a little too late.  I should have pushed a little more on the hills.  I never was close to redline except at the very end.

Either way, it was great to run this race again.  I haven't run it in several years.  BIG thanks to JG for getting me his son's race number.

40:19 time - 6:23 overall pace

Now I know a little more of where my fitness is.  I have a 4 miler in 10 days.  That should be fun.

Thanks Smooth! I hadn't run this race in 4 or 5 years so it was fun to be back at it. over 60000 people run it. It is crazy. Luckily we started in the first group so there was no weaving.

Yeah Slick I was not legal, but I had a legal bib that someone paid for at least. Yeah the 14 yr old got credit for the race. He officially finished 4th in his AG. My wife made lots of fun for me finishing 4th in the 14 and under AG. :)

Just a short day today.  Slight pain in my foot at times during the run.  Nothing afterwards though.  Will monitor it closely.  Felt good except on the last mile where I felt out of fuel.  Not much lunch and no snack so that would explain it.  Still a decent pace compared to many this last month or so.

5 @ 7:13 ave pace

I'm kind of excited and nervous for my 4 mile race on Sat. I usually go out too fast on this course. If I can reign myself in for the first 1.5, I will have something left. It is "moderately hilly", as they say on the website. This course is hard to fly in the first mile and then just hang on.   Last time I ran it, I got a 23:31 and the previous year was a 23:32. I won't see those times but I've lost a lot of fitness since 2010. Low 6 pace would be a step in the right direction. Maybe beat 25.  With my 10k time last week, McMillan puts me in at a 25:19.  I think I'm in better shape than that.  We shall see.

Dale, I think you can get live stream thru some servers, such as DirectTV but it is at 4am Mountain Time (11am London time).

Check out a listing of the track and field (marathon is included) schedule on the NBC website.

left the house at 7:45AM - just wandered around town.  Ran downtown and touched 3 of the big slyscrapers just for fun.  Felt good - my gps said it was only 11.something, but it got stopped at some point.  So on mapmyrun it came out to 12.3.

12.3 at mid to high 7 ave pace

4 decent weeks in  row -- just need to keep the momentum going

also having fun building a raised playhouse for my kids -

came off the weekend at just under 150lbs.  Things are progressing slowly but surely.

3:30 PM4 @ 7:18 - each mile faster than the other - last sub-7.

Forgot I have a 5K on Saturday...

6:30 PM -  4.1 @ 6:35 ave pace  - 6:57, 6:33, 6:19, 6:10, last .1 a slow jog -- felt good so I pushed a little just to see what happened.  Felt like I slowed down the last mile but guess not.

Training has been a little better since the last race, so I was hoping for some progress in my race time.  This is the first time I have run this course.  There are two cat 5 climbs (according to mapmyrun).  One is in the last half of the 2nd mile.  And the other is in the last .25 of the 3rd mile.  There are also some really good downhill sections, so I guess it all evens out.

I went out purely by feel and settled into a pace I thought I could maintain.  I think this is where I can push a little more to shave some time off.  It is hard to know where you can push and where you need to save on a new course.  All in all I am happy with this time.  It is progress and that's what I want to see.  Mcmillan predicted a 19:35 based on the last race and a 19:25 based on the 10k on the 4th of july.  So I count this result as a good step forward.

6:07 ave pace - 5:53, 6:31, 5:59, 5.46  -- that hill in the 2nd mile was really steep in sections.  I hated giving that much time back

I have 6 weeks until my next race - a 5 miler (or 10 if I feel crazy).  i really need to beat last years time - 30:40 or something like that - really.

But I had a great adventure with the family which is more important to me right now. I am rested and all set to go. No foot pain at all. We'll see after my run today. Looking forward to it.

Just got back from a long vacation in Puerto Rico.  Had a great adventure.  Didn't run at all but I was ok with that...

Foot feels great.

weight not changed - which is a huge bonus -- 147 this morning

5 miles in the PM - felt great for 2.5 then the wheels fell off.  Two miles under 7 but the last was over 8.  Body rebelled to working I guess.

Today went a little better than yesterday, but my quads still are sore, which is just wrong.  That's what I get when I get after taking a week+ off.  At least my heart and lungs were a little more happy today.

I will do my 5 mile race on Saturday but will be lucky to hold any decent pace.  This is disappointing cause this is a favorite race in the fall.  I'll just have to take it as a good measure of my fitness.

This year has had its ups and downs.  I can't seem to hold any momentum in my training.  Need to sit back and take a look at why, I suppose.  Most likely I'll just keep plugging away and try to train smarter.  I can't run like I'm 38 anymore.  Probably need to maintain a focus on quality vs quantity.

It stinks sometimes to see how quickly we loose our fitness if we take a little R&R, huh! No worries, your fitness and base are there.

So sorry this hasn't been a good year with your training. I read some threads on Letsrun about master runners plateauing and how they cut back on mileage but put in rest days or cross training that their legs are happier and able to improve on their 10k times!

You are a great runner and wicked fast in my book. Good luck on Sat. ! :)

From timp on Wed, Sep 19, 2012 at 10:53:42 from 99.110.188.230

Yeah Smooth, I am surprised how much my legs are feeling it so far this week. It is weird.

And I sure need to work in some more bike work in the next year. Once I get a new job and get a little money security I am going to get a new entry level road bike so I can add that. I think that really helped my fitness while out last summer.

Felt a little better on this run, although it felt like I'd slip into an episode at any moment in the last 1.5 miles.  But I worked on my breathing and trying to relax and never really slowed.

More work than 7:19 pace should be,  but it is progress.  I think my body is remembering  what it needs to do.

felt ok today for the 5mile race - not much happened during it.  Mcmillan pace calculator from the 5k last month put me in at 6:15 pace for 5 miles, but that 5k was a hilly course where this one is a little flatter.  However, the last three weeks has been garbage as far as training goes, so I didn't expect much.

Just tried to find a pace and stick with it.  The 2nd mile I think I backed off a little on purpose (for no good reason) but then picked it back up after that.

Wasn't sure if I'd make the drive up to this race today.  Yesterday after my run i started feeling a little pf in my left foot.  Kind of came up out of the blue.  But I wanted to try.  So I got up there and started warming up.  Luckily the race started 30 min later than I thought.  Got in 3 miles prior to the gun, and that really helped.

Took off at a 6:07 first mile and then settled into a pretty even pace for the last 5.2.  They were around 6:17-6:20.   I was really wheezy the whole race.  Not sure if that affected anything but it was annoying.

6:07, 6:20, 6:18, 6:17, 6:20, 6:19 , 5:35 (last .25=)

It was 4 sec slower per mile than mcmillan predicted off of the 5 miler two weeks ago, but given that I almost couldn't go, I'm ok.  But it is 22 sec slower than last year.  crap -

i agree with rhett -- impressive race. the 10k is the hardest distance out there, imo. :) you stayed very consistent throughout the race, and those 22 seconds can be explained by any number of things. nice job.

That's only my 5th 10k, which just seems weird, after all these years. At least it is around 80 sec faster that the last one on July 4.

3 more work-days of being at home.  I went out around 2 for 4 sluggish miles.  hoping to run with the Oakhurst group tonight for 6 more.  This weather is amazing.

4 @ 7:28  - first 2 were over 7:30 and the last two were around 7:15 or something like that.

kind of a silly goal, but I made it a point to make at least 160 miles this month.  I've only gone over that 3 months this year.  Pretty sad.  I need to get my butt in gear.  Should go over 40 this week if all things go well.  I'm trying to get back to where 40+ is normal.  Will be harder once my job starts but it will be a goal.

ok 6 with the group - felt harder and not as hard all at the same time - I'll call it a tempo run.  I really didn't feel great the whole time.  These paces shouldn't be that hard.

NICE long run! These 2 hr weekend runs are the bread and butter of marathon training! Good job, Tim! :)

I really like the goal of hitting 200 mi month. Last year I ran 2400 miles with that goal in mind. The lowest mileage months were in April and Oct where I had two goal marathons doing tapering and recovering. I think 200m/month is my limit...more than that I just get fatigued, or risk injured. But that's b/c I am old...at least older than you! :)

She did great and was so happy to see all the people cheering and high five-ing.  And she sprinted to the end and didn't even know she could stop.  She just kept on going.  It was a great day!
